NATO has responded to the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, who earlier requested the inclusion of the Kosovo Forces in the partnership for peace.
The deputy general secretary of NATO says that the Kurti government has not been a reliable political partner, contrary to the Western aspirations of the Kosovar people. He goes on to say that her actions have endangered the lives and safety of KFOR soldiers.
"I am here to confirm NATO's goal of peace and stability. We have not seen progress from Pristina and Belgrade to calm down and this has put the lives of citizens at risk. From recent events, we have had the largest number of injured KFOR soldiers since 1999. This is unacceptable. It is an urgent matter for Pristina and Belgrade to take concrete steps for extension, to dialogue and to respect the agreements", said Thomas Goffus.
Goffus said that he visited the KFOR soldiers in the north, as he stated that the soldiers are ready to intervene if there is an escalation of the situation.
"We call on the two parties to respect the Brussels agreement and the implementing annex of Ohrid. "No one should attempt a new conflict in Europe," he said.
The deputy secretary emphasizes that timely and meaningful cooperation is of key importance, but adds that a decline in practical and political coordination has been seen with Kosovo, which according to him contradicts the Euro-Atlantic aspirations of the Kosovar people.
Goffus also states that KFOR soldiers have left their families and come to ensure peace and the narratives about their soldiers are unacceptable on both sides.
"Timely and meaningful cooperation is of key importance, as I emphasized in my meetings today. Effective cooperation is how Kosovo demonstrates that it can be an effective security partner for NATO. Unfortunately, we have seen a decline in our practical and political coordination. This contradicts the Euro-Atlantic aspirations of the Kosovar people.
We have a decline in cooperation with Kosovo. KFOR soldiers leave their families and come here to ensure peace and the narratives about our soldiers are unacceptable from both sides. I am here in Pristina to emphasize NATO's unwavering commitment to a peaceful and stable region of Kosovo and the Western Balkans", said Goffus.
