Regional sources have confirmed to CNN that Pakistan and Qatar are conducting intensive diplomatic efforts to bring the United States and Iran back into negotiations, following the breakdown of the ceasefire and the resumption of mutual attacks.
According to the same sources, the two countries, which were the main mediators in previous rounds of talks held in Switzerland, are working to return the parties to dialogue, with the aim of preventing further escalation of the conflict.
Previous negotiations had led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in mid-June, an agreement that was seen as an important step towards regional stabilization. Oman also played a supporting role in facilitating those diplomatic rounds.
On Wednesday evening, Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strong statement, calling on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid any actions that could undermine regional peace and stability.
"There is no alternative but continued engagement, dialogue and diplomacy to achieve the shared goal of peace in the region. Pakistan calls on all parties to fulfill their respective commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which remains a solid foundation for understanding, mutual respect and shared prosperity for the region and beyond ," the ministry statement said.
So far, neither Washington nor Tehran have issued official statements about the new mediation efforts. However, diplomatic sources suggest that there are preliminary positive signals for the possibility of a new meeting, perhaps in a format similar to the one in Switzerland.
