Peace plan discussed in Geneva, Russia and Ukraine count victims

While talks on the peace plan are taking place in Geneva, Russia and Ukraine have continued fighting overnight.

The Ukrainian capital, Kiev, came under attack overnight, with at least two deaths reported. Ukraine also carried out attacks on Russia, where officials said three people were killed.

The latest airstrikes come after days of intense talks on a US-backed plan to end the war, which initially drew criticism from Kiev and European leaders.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says the plan now contains "many of the right elements" after negotiations.

Further talks are planned in the coming days, and Sir Keir Starmer will host a virtual meeting of Ukraine allies later, the BBC reports.

Two dead in overnight attack in Kiev

The Ukrainian capital, Kiev, was hit by Russian missiles and drones overnight, with officials saying at least two apartment blocks were hit.

Writing on Telegram, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine says two people have died and six have been injured.

Tymur Tkachenko, head of the capital's military administration, says one of them was killed when a multi-story residential building was hit on the east bank of the Dnieper River.

Emergency services said a high-rise building was also hit in the Pechersk district in the city center and a fire caused damage to three floors before being brought under control.

"We must be aware that Russia will not ease its pressure on Ukraine," President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier, as his air force issued a missile warning across the country.

Zelensky: US plan contains 'many of the right elements'

The overnight attacks came shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed changes to a US-backed peace plan.

Kiev and its allies in Europe have pushed the US to change the plan, fearing it leaves too much to Russia.

Both Ukraine and the US have signaled progress in recent days, with Zelensky issuing another optimistic message late Monday.

He said the plan, which initially included 28 points, had been reduced and "many of the right elements have been taken into consideration."

Zelensky wrote on social media that “the list of steps necessary to end the war can become feasible.”

"Our team has reported on the new draft of steps and this is indeed the right approach, I will discuss sensitive issues with President Trump," Zelensky said.

Russia: Three killed in Ukraine airstrikes

Russian officials in the border regions of Krasnodar and Rostov say Ukraine has carried out deadly air strikes overnight.

The Russian Defense Ministry says it has shot down 249 Ukrainian drones. The acting governor of the Rostov region says at least three people were killed. "Tonight's enemy attack brought great grief," Yuri Sliusar wrote on Telegram.

In the region's port city of Taganrog, which reported one of the deaths, mayor Svetlana Kambulova has pledged "necessary response measures".

In the border region of Krasnodar, Governor Veniamin Kondratyev calls the nighttime bombing "one of the most sustained and massive attacks by the Kiev regime."
