Netanyahu against President Biden's stance on a future Palestinian state

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared on Saturday to contradict US President Joe Biden's statements about a Palestinian state after the end of the war against Hamas in Gaza.

Mr. Biden said on Friday that he had spoken in a phone call with Mr. Netanyahu about possible solutions to the creation of an independent Palestinian state, suggesting that an alternative could be a demilitarized government.

"In his conversation with President Biden, Prime Minister Netanyahu reiterated his position that once Hamas is destroyed, Israel must maintain security control over Gaza to ensure that Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel, which contradicts the demand for Palestinian sovereignty," said a statement from the Israeli prime minister's office.

Asked to clarify whether Mr. Netanyahu is opposed to any kind of alternative to a Palestinian state, his office did not immediately respond.

The call between the two leaders was the first in nearly a month, the White House said.

Asked if a two-state solution was "impossible" while Prime Minister Netanyahu is in power, President Biden said: "No, it's not."

The president told reporters gathered at the White House that he believes "there are several types of two-state solutions" and that Mr. Netanyahu may be open to one of them.

Mr. Netanyahu has not directly and clearly rejected the creation of a Palestinian state. But on Thursday he said that in any settlement for the foreseeable future “Israel must have security control over all the territory west of the Jordan River. This is a necessary condition. This goes against the principle of sovereignty, but we have nothing to do."

US-backed peace talks towards a so-called "two-state solution" failed a decade ago.

On Thursday, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said there was no way to solve Israel's long-term security challenges and the short-term challenges of Gaza's reconstruction without the creation of a Palestinian state. Mr. Miller said that Israel had an opportunity now that countries in the region are willing to provide security guarantees to Israel. /VOA
