Trump gives green light to Ukraine attacks inside Russia?
US President Donald Trump sparked heated debate on Thursday by suggesting that Ukraine should directly strike Russian territory to stand a chance in the war. His statement comes at a time when peace talks have stalled and the war has entered its third year with no solution in sight.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: " It is very difficult, if not impossible, to win a war without attacking the invader's country. It's like a sports team that has an incredible defense but is not allowed to play offense. There is no chance of winning! So is the case with Ukraine and Russia ."
He added further attacking the current US president: " Joe Biden, corrupt and incompetent, never allowed Ukraine to fight, only defend itself. How did this end? Anyway, this is a war that would never have happened if I were president, ZERO chance. Interesting times are coming!!! ".
Trump's rhetoric touches a nerve center for Moscow, which considers any support for Ukrainian attacks on Russian soil a "red line."
The Biden administration had banned Ukraine from using long-range US missiles against Russia until the end of 2024. But after pressure from allies, Washington lifted the restriction. Shortly afterwards, the Kremlin changed its nuclear doctrine, warning that any attack on Russia supported by a nuclear power would be treated as a joint attack.
Just days later, Moscow tested a new medium-range intercontinental ballistic missile, the Oreshnik, hitting the Ukrainian city of Dnipro. Russia regularly uses Kiev’s long-range drones against energy and military infrastructure as an argument to portray Ukraine as a “terrorist regime.”
Peace blocked, new airstrikes
Trump's comments came as the Kremlin dismissed the possibility of a face-to-face meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Sources in Moscow suggest that Putin has not yet given any credence to such a dialogue, indicating that peace is still a long way off.
Meanwhile, Russia carried out a series of airstrikes overnight on various Ukrainian cities. One of the missiles hit a US-owned manufacturing company, injuring at least 15 people.
Trump, coded messages to the Kremlin
Shortly after his post, Trump shared an old photo with Putin, superimposed over a historical image from 1959, where then-US Vice President Richard Nixon is seen arguing fiercely with Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev.
Trump's clear gesture to show that he is ready to restore the diplomatic strongman game with Moscow, but also a signal that he may use the war in Ukraine as a political card for his return to power. /Adapted from "CNN"
