Law enforcement took a photo of Crooks an hour before the shooting, adding to mounting evidence that they knew of his presence long before he pulled the trigger.
More mysterious details emerge from the assassination of Donald Trump.
Thomas Matthews Crook, was at the former president's rally three hours before he shot him and raised the suspicions of the Secret Service because he was carrying a rangefinder device used by hunters.
The 20-year-old had told his boss he needed a day off work on Saturday and told colleagues he would be back on Sunday.
Around 3 p.m. Saturday, Crooks was seen at the rally's security checkpoint and attempted to pass through metal detectors with a rangefinder, which is used by hunters to measure distance, CNN reported. The device, which looks like a pair of small binoculars, wouldn't have prevented him from entering the rally, but it did put him on the radar of law enforcement.
The Secret Service watched him, but lost track of Crooks when he left the secure area. He was then believed to have taken his rifle from the car, inside which a bulletproof vest and two explosive devices were found.

At about 6:11 p.m., Crooks took up a position on a sloping roof and fired at Trump from a distance of about 165 meters, wounding him in the ear and killing retired fire chief Corey Comperatore.

Two other newly released images also show a bicycle owned by Crooks which was found near the scene and a remote detonator which was recovered from his dead body along with his mobile phone. It was later revealed that the detonator was linked to the explosives found in his car.
The gunman was also acting strangely around the metal detectors that attendees were forced to pass before entering the venue. Witnesses said Crooks was frantically checking his phone and using hunting equipment.
He tried to enter around that point but set off the detector and was turned away, sources said.
Around 5:30 p.m., a photo of Crooks was circulated to various members of the Secret Service following reports of his suspicious behavior at security.
The photo shows Crooks wearing a T-shirt with the logo of the popular YouTube channel Demolition Ranch.
At some point, the officers lost track of Crooks. He was then seen climbing onto the roof of the American Glass Research building. About seven minutes later, he opened fire on Donald Trump.
Trump took the stage at 6:03 p.m., an hour behind schedule. Shots were fired at the scene around 6:11 p.m.
After the shooting that killed a spectator, investigators were looking for any clues about what might have prompted Crooks, a resident of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, to carry out the shocking attack.
The FBI said they were investigating it as a possible act of domestic terrorism, but the lack of a clear ideological motive from the man killed by the Secret Service allowed conspiracy theories to flourish.
