The Cypriot problem came into focus during today's plenary session of the European Parliament, where President Roberta Metsola gave a strong statement regarding the 50th anniversary of the Turkish occupation of Cyprus.

As she promised in her speech after the re-election yesterday, Metsola emphasized that "the separation of a member state is not a national issue, but a European issue".

Metsola underlined that "we have the opportunity to heal our wounds and strive for a sovereign country based on the resolutions of the UN Security Council and European values. On this tragic anniversary, we want to show that we are united and stand together" .

"The challenges Cyprus faces are European challenges and Europe will never be truly united as long as Cyprus remains divided ," she stressed.

Metsola said that "this week, the European Parliament commemorates the sad 50th anniversary of July 20, 1974, the consequences of which are still visible today. Secession has no place in Europe, so it is important to emphasize that the forced secession of an EU member state is not a Cypriot issue but a European issue and we must respond in a European manner."

She continued: In my inaugural speech as President of the EP (in 2022), I mentioned that Cyprus is not a forgotten corner of the EU and I repeated this yesterday. The EU was forged by the painful history of our continent. Where once we had war, pain and bloodshed, now we have meetings in the spirit of cooperation.

She concluded by saying: "Dear friends, on this sad anniversary, the message from the EP is that we will not look away from Cyprus. We are one. The challenges Cyprus faces are our challenges and the EU will not full life, as long as Cyprus is divided", this speech that stirs the waters between Cyprus and Turkey.
