There has been a string of tumultuous deaths in Russia, especially since the start of the war in Ukraine. The most recent death was that of opposition leader Alexei Navalny. After trying to eliminate himself by poisoning, he was sent to prison for over two years and was found dead yesterday. It is not yet known why he died, as the West accused Putin. His death precedes that of Wagner head Yevgeny Prigozhin, who attempted a rebellion against Putin but backed down.
Mysterious deaths in Russia
February 25, 2022 - Alexander Tyulakov, 61, a senior official at Gazprom, the Russian energy giant, reportedly hanged himself in a village near St. Petersburg.
March 23, 2022 - Vasily Melnikov, 43, head of pharmaceutical company Medstom, was stabbed to death along with his wife and two young children at their home in Nizhny Novgorod, a city in central Russia.
April 18, 2022- Vladislav Avayev, 51, a former deputy president of Gazprombank, allegedly shot dead his wife Yelena and 13-year-old daughter Maria before turning the gun on himself in their luxury apartment in Moscow.
April 19, 2022 - Sergey Protosenya, 55, a senior manager at Russia's energy giant Novatek, was reported to have killed his wife and 18-year-old daughter before killing himself at the family home in Spain.
May 3, 2022 - Andrei Krukovsky, 37, head of a luxury ski resort owned by Gazprom, is said to have died after falling off a cliff while hiking in southern Russia.
May 9, 2022 - Alexander Subbotin, 43, a billionaire board member of Lukoil, the Russian oil company, died after ingesting toad venom given to him by two shamans, police said.
July 4, 2022- Yuri Voronov, 61, a businessman with ties to Gazprom, was found dead of a gunshot wound near a swimming pool at a luxury estate in St. Petersburg.
September 1, 2022 - Ravil Maganov, 67, was chairman of Lukoil, the only Russian energy company to call for an end to the war. He died after falling five stories from a hospital window in Moscow.
September 10, 2022 – Ivan Pechorin, an aviation industry executive, drowned in the waters off the port of Vladivostok after allegedly falling from his ship.
September 21, 2022 - Anatoly Gerashchenko, 73, a former head of the Moscow Aviation Institute, died after falling from a ladder at the institute.
September 28, 2022 - Pavel Pchelnikov, 52, a senior manager at a subsidiary of Russian Railways, was found dead on the balcony of his Moscow apartment after reportedly shooting himself.
August 23, 2023- Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner Group, died under mysterious circumstances after rebelling against Putin. His plane exploded in the air.
February 16, 2024 - Alexei Navalny, died in prison. He was arrested in January 2021 after returning to Moscow from Germany where he was being treated for nerve agent poisoning, which he blamed on the Kremlin. While serving a nine-year prison sentence, in August last year he was sentenced to 19 years in prison on charges of extremism. / Pamphlet
