The prison directorate where Russian opposition leader and most vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin, Alexei Navalny, was serving his sentence told his mother that he died of "sudden death syndrome". This is the first official response to the reasons for Navalny's death.
The news was announced by a member of Navalny's team, Ivan Zhdanov. The latter announced on the X network that Navalny's family is waiting for the body.
Navalny's team claims he was killed and accuses Russian authorities of keeping his body to "cover their tracks".
Russian investigators said Navalny's body will not be released to the family until the investigation is completed, according to opposition spokeswoman Kira Jarmish.
She previously said the family did not know where his body was. Initially, the prison administration was told that his body was in the Salehard city morgue, not far from the prison, but when Navalny's mother and lawyer arrived there, the morgue was closed.
Alexei Navalny died in Correctional Colony No. 3 in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District at the age of 48, the regional department of the Federal Penal Service announced on Friday.
" On February 16 of this year, in the correctional colony number 3, the convict Navalny AA felt bad after a walk, losing consciousness almost immediately. Medical workers from the institution arrived immediately and the emergency medical team was called. All the necessary interventions were carried out, but they did not give positive results. Emergency doctors declared the death of the convict. The causes of death are being determined ," the announcement states.
