From Wadephul to Krichbaum, who are the key ministers in Germany's new

Germany's incoming Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, released some of the names of his government cabinet on Monday.

"We are united by the goal of showing that Germany is again capable of leading from the political center, is again capable of acting, is again capable of governing, and we want to accept this task, dear friends, from next week, Tuesday onwards," Merz said.

At the Foreign Ministry, Johann Wadephul, an experienced defense and foreign policy expert, will lead Germany's diplomatic efforts at a time of rising global tensions.

In a major economic move, Katherina Reiche - a former energy executive and former lawmaker - will head the Ministry of Economics and Energy, overseeing Germany's reindustrialization plans.

Patrick Schnieder, a veteran transport policymaker, takes over the Transport Ministry, while Karin Prien will lead the Education Ministry. Nina Warken, a Bundestag legal specialist, has been appointed to lead the Health Ministry.

Merz has also created a new Ministry for Digitalization, choosing physicist and technology executive Karsten Wildberger to push long-overdue digital reforms in the government.

Cultural and media affairs will be headed by Wolfram Weimer, a well-known journalist and publisher. Christiane Schenderlein, a member of the Bundestag with experience in cultural policy, becomes Minister of State for Sport and Voluntary Engagement.

For European affairs, Merz appointed strong voices from his conservative Christian Democratic Union: Serap Güler joins the Foreign Ministry as state minister for international cooperation, while Gunther Krichbaum, a veteran of EU politics, takes on the role of state minister for European affairs.

Thorsten Frei — a key Merz ally and former CDU/CSU parliamentary manager — will become head of the Chancellery, a powerful role similar to a chief of staff. Frei will be responsible for coordinating government operations and ensuring cabinet discipline, a critical post as Merz seeks to push through his ambitious domestic and security agenda.

The CDU's conservative Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), will lead three ministries. Alexander Dobrindt, who led the CSU's state group in parliament and was one of the main negotiators in the coalition talks, will become the country's next interior minister.

Dorothee Bär, one of the most prominent female conservative lawmakers, is set to lead the research and space ministry. Alois Rainer, a longtime mayor and finance expert, is expected to become agriculture minister.

It is still unclear who the six ministers from the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) will be. These names are expected to be announced after the result of the SPD's mandatory membership vote on the coalition agreement on Wednesday - although some appointments, such as Boris Pistorius as defence minister, are already considered safe bets.

The next government is expected to take office on May 6.
