
A former FBI agent who received more than $1.4 million and diamonds to sell secrets to Russia and the Soviet Union in one of the most notorious espionage cases in the United States died Monday in prison.
Robert Hanssen, 79, died in his cell at a federal prison in Florence, Colorado, prison officials said.
American Hanssen is believed to have died of natural causes, an individual with knowledge of the matter told the Associated Press news agency. The individual spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to discuss the facts in public.
Robert Hanssen was serving a life sentence after pleading guilty in 2001 to 15 counts of espionage and other charges.
In 1985 he began selling top-secret information to the Soviet Union and then Russia, making $1.4 million in diamonds and other funds over a 16-year period, according to the FBI.
According to the Bureau of Prisons, the FBI has been notified of the death of the infamous Hanssen. He had been serving his sentence in a Colorado prison since July 2002.
