Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Annual inflation in Turkey fell below 40 percent in May for the first time in 16 months.

According to official data, this decrease was prompted by the current offer of free gas for households.

Consumer prices increased by 39.6 percent on an annual basis and were almost stable with the previous month, the State Statistics Agency said.

However, these official figures – the first since Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was sworn in for a new term on May 28 – are being challenged by independent economists at the Turkey Inflation Research Group.

According to this group, the annual rate of inflation ranges between 105 and 109 percent, depending on whether the free supply of gas is taken into account.

Erdogan, who has started his third term as president, has said that fighting inflation will be his top priority.

Inflation hit 85 percent in the fall of 2022, before falling later.

Although prices continue to rise every month, the trend is much slower than in the previous year.
