A 'ghost army', what Germany is preparing for

Too few soldiers and almost no equipment! The Bundeswehr reservist association describes the planned new homeland security division as a "ghost army."

The Bundeswehr is creating a new fourth division for homeland security. This division, made up of reservists and active soldiers, is supposed to secure infrastructure such as bridges, supply facilities and important military facilities in Germany in the event of an emergency.

Patrick Sensburg, head of the reservists' association (more than 100,000 members, up to 40,000 active reservists) told BILD that "the reservists can only contribute to prevention if they are given the necessary equipment. For the country's security, this also means vehicles, communication means, drones, mortars and especially ammunition. There is still a lack of defensive capability here at every step."

There is a risk "that a phantom army will be created here, which largely exists only on paper and is never put into practice," Sensburg said.

Now we must put all our efforts into recruiting personnel.

FDP defense expert Alexander Müller wants to transfer more "office soldiers" to active troops. "If we combine and reduce the leadership staff and can actively use the soldiers who are released back into the troops, then the Bundeswehr will gain overall strength and effectiveness," Müller tells BILD.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the Bundeswehr wants to train qualified personnel for the new division within a short period of time, who are at the same level as active troops.

A spokesman for the Bundeswehr Territorial Command says that "new special courses are being created specifically for the specific operational requirements that the country's future security entails."

According to plans, a sixth homeland security regiment with reservists will be raised near Berlin and combined with the five previous regiments in the homeland security division.

A total of 6,000 men and women will be available from April 1.
