Mysterious disease in India causes 13 deaths, 11 are children; scientists on

Experts are still baffled by a 'mysterious new disease' that has killed 13 people in northern India. Doctors have ruled out viral, bacterial or microbial infections while investigating the disease, which has killed three more children in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district.

Investigating doctors have identified "several neurotoxins" that appear to have been found in samples from 13 of the dead. India's top medical experts have been mobilized to trace the source of the "mysterious illness."

Scientists - from three of India's top universities - conducted microbiological tests on water and food samples collected from the village affected by the disease. The deadly disease disproportionately kills children, who account for 11 of the fatalities since December 7 last year.

An official spokesperson for the local authorities said that "these deaths were found to be local and probably had an epidemiological link. It was also made public that some neurotoxins were found in the samples of the deceased, which are being further investigated to learn more about it."

India's health ministry teams are conducting aggressive contact tracing and sampling in the village where the disease emerged, sources told India Express.

A source said that "the agency has already collected food and water samples to determine the quality and safety of essential supplies in the area. The administration has also placed a mobile medical unit and an ambulance on standby to deal with any urgent medical needs."

Minister of Health and Medical Education Sakina Itoo also ruled out a viral infection or disease. She said that 3,500 samples collected by the Ministry of Health in the last month and sent for examination to various health institutions across the country came back “negative.”

"It is now a matter of investigation for the regional administration and the police to discover the causes of the deaths of the 13 people," he added.
