US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said the United States was not directly involved in the Syrian offensive that brought the rebels to power.
"We didn't run it. There's an opportunity to build something much better in the future ," Sullivan said, adding that the U.S. will work with "all groups" in Syria.
Although President Joe Biden has not spoken directly with President-elect Donald Trump about events in Syria, Sullivan said Biden has spent "a significant amount of time" briefing his successor, Mike Waltz.
The White House is monitoring the situation in Syria for information about the whereabouts of American journalist Austin Tice who disappeared at a checkpoint in Damascus in 2012, Sullivan added.
"The White House is in contact with Turkey, other countries in the region and people on the ground in Damascus to track who is coming out of these prisons," Sullivan concluded.
