President Donald Trump is firing the head of the Labor Department's statistical branch after the latest monthly jobs report came in well below expectations.
"I have instructed my team to fire this Biden political appointee, immediately," Trump wrote in a post on social media.
The firing of Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntire came after Trump repeated previous accusations that the BLS secretly released overly optimistic jobs figures late in the Biden administration, which were revised in an effort to influence the election. Economists have categorically rejected these claims as a misunderstanding of the agency's review processes.
The BLS produces some of the most closely watched economic statistics in the country, such as the monthly employment and inflation reports, which feature prominently in the Federal Reserve's assessment of the economy. These reports are also critical for businesses as they develop investment and hiring plans.
"Important numbers like this must be fair and accurate, they cannot be manipulated for political purposes," Trump wrote.
"McEntarfer said that only 73,000 jobs were added (a shock!), but, more importantly, that they made a big mistake, 258,000 fewer jobs, in the previous two months."
Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer said she supports Trump's decision and that Deputy Commissioner William Wiatrowski will take over as deputy commissioner. Wiatrowski has held the acting title twice, including for more than two years at the start of Trump's first term.
News of Trump's move against the BLS head added to anxiety in markets, which were already down as investors processed Trump's new tariff regime and the weak jobs report.
"What does a bad leader do when he gets bad news? He shoots the messenger," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in the chamber shortly after Trump's tweet.
