Several small Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf could take on strategic importance if the United States decides to increase pressure on Iran, including ground military options, according to analyst Tim Lister.
Three US Navy contingents have been deployed to the region, although President Donald Trump has stated that he has no intention of deploying troops on the ground.
"I wouldn't deploy troops anywhere ," he told reporters, adding that if he were considering such a move, he wouldn't make it public.
Although some of these islands are very small and have limited surface area, their position near major sea routes gives them special strategic importance. Kharg Island stands out for its economic weight, as over 90% of Iran's oil exports pass through it.
According to the analysis, US forces have previously carried out intensive attacks on military positions in Kharg, highlighting the importance of this facility in Iran's energy infrastructure.
Iranian authorities have warned against any possible attack on their islands. The military headquarters in Tehran has threatened to retaliate against the United Arab Emirates in the event of an attack on the islands of Abu Musa and Greater Tunb. These islands, along with Lesser Tunb, are located near the Strait of Hormuz, a key corridor for global energy transport.
The dispute over these islands dates back to 1971, when Iran took control of the Tunbs shortly before the creation of the United Arab Emirates. The Emirates has repeatedly demanded their return.
According to the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, Alireza Tangsiri, the Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf constitute “fortified fortresses.” He has declared that any hostile action will be met with a decisive response.
