The World Health Organization has stated that the forced evacuation of seriously ill or seriously injured people from hospitals in northern Gaza would amount to a "death sentence" for some.
WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic told a UN conference in Geneva on Friday that the two main hospitals in northern Gaza have already exceeded their combined capacity of 760 beds and warned of a shortage of blood in hospital blood banks in all of Gaza. Additionally, some medicines are in short supply, including diabetes, seizure and asthma medicines, as well as painkillers and dialysis solutions.
" In general, hospital corridors are overcrowded. Dead bodies are piling up as there is no more space in the morgue ," he said.
Jasarevic said some patients — many of whom are children — were on life support systems like mechanical ventilators, "so moving those people is a death sentence.
" To ask health workers to do this is beyond cruel ," he concluded.
