Russia's Central Election Commission announced on Wednesday that it has postponed local elections scheduled for September in seven districts in the Kursk region, as parts of the region have been under the control of the Ukrainian army since early August.
"The process of preparations and the holding of the elections will resume when the full security of the voters is guaranteed," the commission said in a Telegram communique.
According to the latest data from the Russian authorities, 31 people have been killed and 143 others have been injured in this region since Ukrainian forces launched their incursion into the Kursk region.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on August 19 that Ukrainian forces have taken control of 92 settlements in Russia's Kursk region and now control more than 1,250 square kilometers of enemy territory.
Zelensky has said that the Ukrainian forces are fulfilling their objectives with the continuation of the incursion in Kursk, while Moscow has admitted that Ukraine has damaged the third bridge over the Sejm River, which is very important for the movements of Russian military troops in the region. .
One of Zelensky's top advisers, Mykhaylo Podolyak, has told Current Time television - a project of Radio Free Europe and VOA - that unlike Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, Kiev's operation has an aim to clearly, and is in line with international legislation, but also protects the civilian population.
"Ukraine does not intend to occupy populated territories or occupy this territory," Podolyak said on August 19.
