German authorities have been put on alert after a gunman attacked Hamburg airport and rammed the gate with his vehicle.

The man fired two shots into the air, a federal police spokesman said Saturday night. Air traffic at Hamburg airport was immediately halted, police said, and the terminals were also closed, foreign media reported.

Strong police forces are at the scene conducting searches for the armed perpetrator, while police helicopters are in the air. It is also reported that he has two children hostage inside the vehicle.
