Pope Leo XIV issued a strong appeal to the international community to end the nearly two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas, calling for a permanent ceasefire, the release of all hostages held in Gaza, and the provision of humanitarian aid.
"Once again I make a strong appeal to end the conflict in the Holy Land, which has caused so much terror, destruction and death. I pray that all hostages be released, a permanent ceasefire be achieved, the safe entry of humanitarian aid be facilitated and international humanitarian law be fully respected," the Pope said in his weekly address to the faithful at the Vatican.
The Pope did not mention Israel or the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, but added that international law provides for "the obligation to protect civilians, the prohibition of collective punishment, the indiscriminate use of force and the forcible displacement of populations."
