What should have been a normal school morning turned into a horrific scene of bloodshed in Minneapolis. Police Chief Brian O'Hara confirmed in an official statement that two children, aged 8 and 10, were killed after being shot while sitting in pews inside the Annunciation Catholic School chapel.
According to O'Hara, 17 other people were injured, 14 of whom are children. Two of them are in critical condition and are receiving specialized treatment at a pediatric hospital in the city. "It's a dark day for Minneapolis," the police chief said, his voice trembling. "Innocent children, gathered for a mass, became victims of a brutal act of gun violence."
Footage from the scene showed young children rushing out of the church, many covered in blood and crying. Witnesses said there was total panic as teachers and parents tried to get students out of the building. Police arrived within minutes and brought the situation under control, while the FBI and federal agencies took over the investigation.
Today's tragedy is the fourth deadly shooting in Minneapolis in less than 24 hours, making the city the epicenter of a fierce debate over gun violence in the United States. In three other incidents yesterday, three people were killed and eight others were injured.
Local and federal authorities have declared a state of emergency and have warned of additional security measures at schools and religious institutions. The governor of Minnesota called the event "unacceptable and devastating for the community," while President Donald Trump reacted by calling the situation "a terrible tragedy" and asking Americans to pray for the victims and their families.
Meanwhile, Minneapolis parents are horrified and demanding answers: how is it possible that their children would risk their lives in a place that should have been the safest – a school and a church?
