Pope Francis' health is deteriorating again.
The pope has had two episodes of "acute respiratory failure," the Vatican said.
The 88-year-old has been in the hospital since February 14 with a severe respiratory infection that caused other complications.
Vatican sources added that "it has been another difficult day" and "the Pope's condition is still complex."
The statement reads: "Today, the Holy Father presented two episodes of acute respiratory failure, caused by significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus and consequent bronchospasm.
Therefore, two bronchoscopies were performed with the need to aspirate abundant secretions. In the afternoon, non-invasive mechanical ventilation was resumed, the Holy Father has always remained alert, oriented and cooperative. The prognosis remains reserved."
