Pope Leo has made a new appeal for peace in Ukraine, calling for a 24-hour ceasefire over Christmas, but expressed disappointment that Russia, according to him, has not accepted this request.
" Among the things that have caused me great sadness these days is that Russia has apparently rejected the request for a Christmas truce ," the Holy Father declared, as he left Villa Barberini in Castel Gandolfo to return to the Vatican.
The Pope called on all parties to the conflict, as well as "all people of good will," to stop fighting at least for the Christmas holiday.
“I ask you once again to celebrate the Savior's birthday as a day of peace. May it be a day of peace throughout the world ,” he said.
This is not the first time that Pope Francis has appealed for a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine, repeatedly emphasizing the need for dialogue and the protection of civilians.
His call comes at a time when fighting continues and the prospect of a diplomatic solution remains remote, while the international community is looking for ways to reduce tensions and alleviate humanitarian suffering.
