Ambassadors from Israel, Lebanon and the US will hold the first round of preparatory talks in Washington today, to set the table for future negotiations between Israel and Lebanon.
The first round of discussions will aim to reach an agreement on the terms and agenda for direct negotiations between Israel and Lebanon, which Israel has said will aim to disarm Hezbollah and establish "peaceful relations" between the two countries.
Among the most urgent issues to be negotiated: Lebanon's demand that Israel agree to a ceasefire as a condition for negotiations.
Lebanese officials have said they will not negotiate under pressure, while Israel has rejected a ceasefire with Iran-backed Hezbollah as a precondition for negotiations.
Friday's talks will take place with Michel Issa, the U.S. ambassador to Lebanon; Yechiel Leiter, the Israeli ambassador to the U.S.; and Nada Hamadeh Moawad, the Lebanese ambassador to the U.S., the sources said.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, the US and Iran are expected to meet in Pakistan to discuss a possible peace deal.
