US negotiators will ask Tehran to release American citizens detained in Iran as peace talks begin in Pakistan on Saturday, the Washington Post reported, citing sources familiar with the plans.
The request for the release of the Americans could be delayed if talks between Donald Trump's team and Iran prove difficult, the same sources said.
The release or exchange of detained citizens was not included in the 10-point plan proposed by Iran, made public by Iranian state media and rejected by the US.
White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt stressed that the plan Iran made public was "very different" from what Iranian officials privately conveyed to Trump.
Delegations from Washington and Tehran will meet in Pakistan on Holy Saturday for talks, after agreeing earlier this week to a conditional two-week ceasefire.
