Trump's growing instability is making the world anxious!

Extreme rhetoric and personal power: how Trump's governance is changing...

The most unpredictable president of modern times is increasingly driven by impulsiveness and personal whims. The discipline that characterized the early months of Donald Trump's second term, when structured executive orders reshaped Washington and the US's global priorities, now seems distant.

Decisions like closing USAID, weakening the federal administration, or interfering in university curricula were controversial, but stemmed from a strategy built over the years outside the White House. Lately, Trump seems to be acting more and more often without a plan, with more extreme tones and an increasingly fragile temperament in Washington, in contrast to the calm he displays during weekends in Florida.

The past week has highlighted this trend. Trump has sparked backlash after a racist video featuring Barack and Michelle Obama was shared on his Truth Social network. At the same time, he has resumed his attacks on the electoral system, sending senior officials to seek evidence of alleged fraud in the 2020 election and raising concerns that he may be trying to influence the upcoming congressional elections.

There has also been uncertainty about his anti-immigration campaign, especially after incidents in which American citizens were injured by federal agents. Although Trump has now called for a “softer approach,” critics see this as a rebranding to soften the political fallout of a hardline policy that has alienated many voters. The militarization of law enforcement is seen as a direct result of the president’s personal demands.

At the same time, Trump continues to display an obsession with his personal legacy, pushing ideas such as renaming airports and major train stations after him. He has publicly attacked artists, athletes and cultural events, calling them an insult to the “greatness of America.”

Although a more conventional approach has occasionally emerged, such as the presentation of a platform to reduce drug prices, the dominant impression is that of a president focused on his own personal objectives, often to the detriment of the real concerns of citizens. He has declared himself “very proud” of the economy, but the benefits of economic growth have not been felt equally across all social strata.

This approach certainly has political costs. According to recent polls, only a minority of Americans believe that Trump has the right priorities or that he cares about people like them. Public trust has fallen sharply since the beginning of his term.

A recurring pattern is the transformation of impulsive rhetoric into concrete policy. This was seen in the clash with Denmark over Greenland, which strained relations with allies, but also in trade policies and tariffs. In some cases, international resistance and domestic political pressure have forced Trump to partially back down.

This clash between the president's desire for less limited power and the political and constitutional constraints is shaping the climate of the election year. The election will show whether voters want to rein in Trump or give him more room to maneuver, and whether he will accept the democratic verdict.

In this context, the next clash is expected to be over immigration policy and the role of the ICE agency, with Democrats demanding stronger restrictions, while Republicans continue to defend the president's hard line, despite negative public reactions.

Trump's refusal to apologize for racist content he himself shared underscores that extreme behaviors, which would have serious consequences for other public figures, do not seem to produce the same political effect on him, a reality that continues to deeply polarize American society. / Adapted from "Pamphlet" by "CNN"
