Middle East tensions are being openly instrumentalized to destabilize the security architecture in Bosnia and Herzegovina and challenge Western hegemony in the Balkans. In an interview with the Jerusalem Post, the president of Republika Srpska openly draws a parallel with the case of Israel, implying the right to defend itself with arms from Sarajevo…
The Western Balkans are once again sliding towards a dangerous abyss, where the ghosts of the 1990s find refuge in modern geopolitical comparisons that inspire much fear. Milorad Dodik’s latest statements are not just another provocation; they constitute a dangerous manifesto that seeks to reconceptualize the position of Serbs in Bosnia and Herzegovina as an “island of survival” in a hostile sea.
Borrowing narratives from the globe’s bloodiest conflicts, he is creating a siege mentality that proclaims his entity as the “Israel of the Balkans.” This is not simply a geographical metaphor, but a new war doctrine that warns of profound destabilization for the entire European security architecture.
The breakdown of this message, which has found space even in the pages of the "Jerusalem Post", shows a well-thought-out strategy. Republika Srpska is being presented as a nation under "suffocating siege" by Sarajevo and the international factor.
According to this logic, Bosnian Serbs should adopt the model of the state of Israel: a society in a permanent state of military readiness, which does not trust any international guarantees and which acts unilaterally to guarantee what is called "existential survival."
By calling itself the "Israel of the Balkans," it is formalizing its mental and physical separation from the common state, treating every central institution as hostile territory that must be kept under surveillance by force.
It is extremely alarming that this narrative is being legitimized in the mainstream media, where comparisons are being used to completely invert the roles of victim and aggressor. When it is written that “Serbs in Bosnia are facing the same kind of delegitimization and siege that the state of Israel has endured for decades from its hostile neighbors,” we are witnessing a dangerous geopolitical tactic.
On the one hand, it aims to curry favor with conservative Western circles, but on the other, it dehumanizes the Bosnian Muslim population by equating them with radical groups. This is a process that attempts to undo the historical memory of the genocide and present it as a “legitimate defense” against an imaginary danger.
The hidden meaning behind the phrase "We are the Israel of the Balkans" warns that any separatist action - from the creation of a parallel army to complete secession - will be considered an act of survival. "Republika Srpska is the first line of defense against the creation of an Islamic state in the heart of Europe, just as Israel serves as a shield for Western values" - Dodik declares, among other things, in the interview for the well-known Israeli newspaper.
This is where the real danger lies. It is not about political autonomy, but about igniting a conflict on religious and ethnic grounds. By proclaiming itself the guardian of Christianity against a non-existent “Islamic State” in Bosnia, it is creating the ground for a new conflict that could quickly engulf Kosovo, Montenegro, and the entire Balkans.
This kind of discourse marks the death of the order established by the Dayton Agreement. When it is said that “just as Israel cannot rely solely on foreign promises, the Bosnian Serbs must take their sovereign destiny into their own hands,” the message to the international community is clear: no authority outside the entity is recognized anymore.
So, Dodik is openly warning of a lightning and violent action, completely ignoring diplomacy. The conclusion of the article in the “Jerusalem Post” is an alarm bell: “The Balkans are synchronizing with global tensions, where ethnic and religious identity are once again becoming the front lines of a war that knows no compromise.”
Faced with this ominous scenario, the international community's response so far seems inadequate. There is no more time for protest notes or lukewarm diplomatic rhetoric. The United States and the European Union must intervene decisively to stop this separatist agenda before it reaches the point of no return.
Continuing to tolerate a leader who openly proclaims the end of the current diplomatic order and prepares the ground for ethnic militarization is complicit in the tragedy that is being warned. The US and the EU must use all instruments of force and sanctions to neutralize this hotbed of conflict, guaranteeing Bosnia's sovereignty and the stability of the region.
If Washington and Brussels do not act today, tomorrow the "Israel of the Balkans" will be the focus of a new war, which Europe will not be able to contain within the Balkan borders. / Prepared by: Pamphlet
