Turkish authorities have authorized a new investigation into Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavaş, a leading opposition figure, adding to political tensions in the country. The development comes after the mayor of Istanbul was also the focus of investigations earlier, in a climate that the opposition interprets as increased pressure from the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The Interior Ministry has given permission to launch an investigation following allegations that six Ankara Metropolitan Municipality vehicles were used at an election rally during the 2023 campaign in Karabuk. According to the allegations, the use of these vehicles caused economic damage to the state.
The head of the Public Works Department, Aziz Murat Seyrek, for whom authorization for investigation was previously granted, is also involved in the same case.
Ankara Municipality has rejected the allegations, stating that there is no evidence that Mayor Yavaş gave orders to use the vehicles. According to it, responsibilities are being assigned based on assumptions rather than documented facts.
Yavaş himself is expected to appear at a press conference to clarify his position, while he has the right to appeal the decision to the Council of State within 15 days.
Currently, two cases are active against the mayor of Ankara in the Council of State, while others have been closed. They relate to a concert event and the municipality's opposition to the urban planning practices of the previous administration.
