US President Donald Trump has confirmed that another round of talks will take place with Iran to reach a final peace deal. Trump said the new negotiations could take place within the next two days in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.
Trump initially told the New York Post that discussions were proceeding at a slow pace, before indicating that a second round of direct negotiations to end the seven-week war would likely take place somewhere in Europe.
About half an hour later, Trump called the New York Post again, saying a meeting could take place within the next two days in Islamabad.
" Something could happen in the next couple of days, and we're more likely to go there. More likely, you know why? Because the field marshal is doing a great job ," Trump said.
Trump was referring to Pakistan's Field Marshal, General Asim Munir, with whom he formed a bond last year while the country was in the midst of its war with India, which ended after just four days thanks to a peace deal that the US helped broker.
"He's fantastic, and that's why we're more likely to go back there. Why should we go to a place that has nothing to do with him? " he added.
The president also indicated that he was not pleased with reports that the US had asked Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment program for at least two decades during unsuccessful talks last weekend.
"I said they can't have nuclear weapons, so I don't like 20 years ," he concluded.
