Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has warned that Europe must strengthen its security and response capacity, at a time when the US is signaling the possibility of reducing its military presence on the continent.
Speaking at the European Political Community summit in Yerevan, Meloni stressed that discussions about a greater US disengagement from Europe have been ongoing for some time, so European countries should increase their autonomy in the field of security.
"I can't tell you what will happen. The US has been discussing its disengagement from Europe for a long time, so I think we need to strengthen our security and increase our response capacity," Meloni told reporters when asked about Trump's comments.
"It's a choice that is not up to me and one that I personally would not agree with ," she added.
Her comments come after US President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany, amid strained relations with NATO allies. He has also criticized European countries for their security burdens and lack of support for international operations.
Meloni said she disagreed with a reduction in the US presence, but stressed that the decision was not up to Italy. She added that Rome had fulfilled its international commitments and rejected some criticism directed at her country.
The Italian Prime Minister is expected to meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Rome in an effort to discuss recent developments and bilateral relations.
