President Donald Trump once again expressed what he called his "excellent relationship" with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un during an Oval Office meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Asked if he plans to restore the cordial relationship he enjoyed during his first term with the North Korean leader, Trump told reporters he was willing.
"Well, I would. I had a great relationship with Kim Jong and North Korea. We went to Singapore, where we met, we went to Vietnam, we met, we got along very well. We had a very good relationship and we still do ," Trump said.
The president acknowledged that his initial relationship with Kim "started out very rough," in a nod to his 2017 promise of "fire and fury" if North Korea continued to issue military threats against the US mainland.
But he said the North Korean leader told him that his relationship with his predecessor, former President Barack Obama, was even colder, and that he would not meet with Obama and would not take his calls.
"And so, I have a great relationship with Kim Jong Un and we'll see what happens ," Trump added.
