US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is headed to Saudi Arabia for regional talks on Monday and Tuesday on humanitarian aid to Gaza, the future of the Palestinian territories after the end of the war, and stability and security in the Middle East.
"The secretary of state will discuss ongoing efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza that would secure the release of the hostages and why Hamas has become an obstacle to the Palestinian people and to a ceasefire," the US State Department said.
Secretary Blinken will attend the Riyadh ministerial meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council, a regional alliance of Arab countries located around the Persian Gulf.
National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told ABC's "This Week" on Sunday that the United States is working toward a six-week ceasefire in the nearly seven-month war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas militants.
Ceasefire talks have been ongoing for months and although there are occasional signs that a deal may be imminent, Mr Kirby gave no indication of new progress in the talks.
He said Israel has assured US officials it will not send ground forces into the southern Gaza city of Rafah, without fully heeding US concerns that such an attack would endanger the lives of the more than 1 million Palestinians who have taken refuge there. .
Mr Kirby said a temporary port being built on the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Gaza could be completed in two or three weeks and would enable more humanitarian aid to be transported to the narrow strip to help the Palestinians. /VOA
