US senators have narrowly rejected a resolution limiting Trump's power to declare war on Iran, their first vote on the conflict since a 60-day deadline for the White House to seek formal authorization expired.
The measure, introduced by Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley, was the seventh failed attempt by Democrats to curb Trump's war powers since the conflict began in late February. The vote was 50-49.
Democrats say that, under the War Powers Act, the administration had until May 1 to secure congressional approval for military action after Trump notified lawmakers in early March of the strikes against Iran.
They say Trump is now acting in clear violation of the law. The administration disputes that interpretation, arguing that time was stopped by a ceasefire declared more than a month ago.
