Split in Beijing-Moscow axis? Xi warns Putin about Ukraine
Xi and Putin

The Chinese president discussed with Donald Trump the war in Ukraine and the American suggestion for a united front against the International Criminal Court...

Chinese President Xi Jinping told his US counterpart Donald Trump during talks in Beijing last week that Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin may regret invading Ukraine, the Financial Times reported, citing sources familiar with the US assessment of the summit.

The Chinese president made these comments during broad discussions that touched on the Ukraine issue, where Trump also proposed that the three leaders cooperate against the International Criminal Court.

Xi’s comments on Putin’s decision on Ukraine appear to go further than his previous statements. A person familiar with Xi’s meetings with former President Joe Biden said that while the leaders had had “frank and direct” conversations about Russia and Ukraine, Xi had not previously given such an assessment of Putin and the war.

The revelation comes as Putin prepares to arrive in China for a summit with Xi Jinping, four days after the Chinese leader hosted the US president for only their second meeting since Trump returned to the White House.

The Chinese embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for comment from the Financial Times. The White House also declined to comment. The Trump administration released a briefing statement on Sunday about the summit in Beijing, but it made no reference to discussions on Putin or the war in Ukraine.

During the meeting with Xi, Trump also proposed that the US, China and Russia join forces to oppose the International Criminal Court, saying their interests are shared, according to people familiar with the talks.

The White House declined to comment on the statement about the ICC. However, the Trump administration has previously expressed strong opposition to the International Criminal Court, accusing it of politicization, abuse of power, disregard for American national sovereignty and unlawful overreach of judicial powers. Some American officials have described the institution as a tool of so-called “legal warfare” against the United States.

Xi's statement to Putin came at a time when Russia's war against Ukraine has entered a stalemate after four years, especially as Kiev has become more effective in using drone strikes against Russian forces and targets.
