Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced that the country will receive up to 40 fifth-generation F-35 fighter jets, as well as frigates, tanks and other defense material.
Greece's announcement comes a day after the same action was taken by Turkey but in the purchase of less powerful aircraft, the F-16s.
This comes within the framework of Greece's defense through the increase of defense power on land, sea and air.
According to Mitsotakis, this is a very important day for Greek defense and diplomacy.
"In a period of uncertainty, our country reaffirms that it stands with seriousness and geopolitical maturity on the international map, while at the same time it serves its national rights with the shield of its defense. On the path of stability and peace, always with national pride and confidence", said the head of the Greek government.
The purchase will be made through a $30 million grant from Congress.
On the other hand, just a day ago, the purchase of 40 F-16 fighter jets by Turkey for 23 billion dollars was announced.
For the first time, it made the request for the planes in 2021, but its delay in ratifying Sweden's NATO membership created delays in the purchase of the planes as well.
