Scholz raises the alarm: Dark neo-Nazi networks are growing in Germany!

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed concern about the rise of far-right tendencies in his country, 79 years after the liberation of the infamous Auschwitz camp.

"New information is emerging all the time, about the neo-Nazis and their dark networks," the social democrat said in a videotaped speech commemorating January 27, 1945, the day Auschwitz was liberated by Soviet troops.

"At the same time, right-wing populists are gaining ground, feeding fear and sowing hatred," said Mr. Scholz, adding that this should not be accepted.

Meanwhile, protests against the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party have gained momentum, following reports that two senior members of the party joined a meeting to discuss plans for the mass deportation of citizens of foreign origin. Demonstrations across the country are now entering their third week.

The protesters are seeking to curb support for the AfD, a party that ranks second nationally and first in Germany's three eastern states, which are holding elections this year.

"It is the cohesion of the Democrats that makes our democracy strong," said Mr. Scholz.

"To show this in the form of faith, in public, as is happening now, is a good thing," he added.

The chancellor also welcomed a historic decision to cut funding to the radical right party 'Die Heimat', sparking debate over whether a similar step could be taken against the nationalist AfD party. Referring to the decision Mr. Scholz called it "very good". /VOA
