Extreme weather hits Greece, catastrophic flooding
Greece has been hit by apocalyptic flooding after recent heavy rains and storms, bringing one death and chaos to several areas of the country.
According to Greek media reports, the rainfall has caused rivers to overflow and roads to flood, evacuations, traffic jams, and significant material damage in various communities.
Emergency authorities have announced that at least one person has died as a result of the floods, while rescue teams continue search and operations to help residents trapped in the affected areas. It is learned that an elderly woman was trapped in her car, as she was swept away by the flow of water and later died.
The floods have caused traffic jams and serious infrastructure problems in various regions, including the south and central areas of the country, where rivers have overflowed their banks and flooded roads, fields and residential areas. Local authorities and emergency services have appealed for caution and cooperation from residents to avoid dangerous situations.
Several cars were found completely submerged on various streets in Athens and its suburbs, while water entered basements and businesses in several densely populated urban neighborhoods. The biggest problems were recorded in Nea Philadelphia, Egaleo, Moschato and Peristeri, where small rivers and sewers could not cope with the heavy rainfall. The fire service received hundreds of calls for help, while many road axes were temporarily closed. All emergency services are on full alert to deal with the situation.
Authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and carefully follow civil protection advisories, as rainfall is expected to continue overnight and into the next day. The situation remains critical and an urgent government meeting is expected to assess further steps.
