North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has ordered the execution of 30 officials for failing to prevent massive floods and landslides this summer that killed nearly 4,000 people and displaced more than 15,000 others, according to South Korean media, writes 'The New York Post' today.
An official said that "about 30 government officials in North Korea had been accused of corruption and abuse of office, with the state sentencing them to death
"About 30 cadres in the flood-hit area were executed at the same time, at the end of last month," this official told the media.
Reports of executions have not been verified by independent media. The officials who were executed were not identified, but the report noted that Chagang, Party Committee secretary since 2019, was among the leaders fired by Kim in an emergency meeting during the flood disaster.
Kim was seen last month surveying damaged areas and meeting with residents as he estimated it would take months to rebuild the flooded neighborhoods.
The North Korean leader also criticized reports from South Korea about the death toll, rejecting claims of thousands killed.
In 2019, the North Korean state allegedly executed its nuclear envoy to the US for failing to negotiate a summit between Kim and then-US President Donald Trump.
"Then it was revealed that Chol was simply in custody," reports CNN.
