At least 161 people are still missing in Texas after devastating floods hit the state last week. So far, 109 deaths have been confirmed, 94 of them in the city of Kerrville, according to Gov. Greg Abbott. Among the missing are five female campers and a counselor from Camp Mystic.
Search and rescue efforts continue in earnest, involving helicopters, drones and hundreds of workers from multiple agencies, including the FBI and the National Guard. However, authorities say hopes of finding survivors are fading.
Governor Abbott said a 30-foot-high "wall of water" hit the area after heavy rains, leaving residents with no time to evacuate. He said authorities had issued storm warnings, but no one predicted the scale of the disaster.
Meanwhile, severe flooding has also hit neighboring New Mexico, with residents in Ruidoso warned of high risk. Several homes have been flooded and rescue operations are ongoing.
President Donald Trump is expected to visit affected areas in Texas this Friday along with First Lady Melania Trump.
