US President Donald Trump has for the first time clearly expressed his anger at Vladimir Putin, warning of tough new sanctions against Russia over its aggression in Ukraine. "I'm not happy with Putin. He's killing a lot of people and a lot of them are his soldiers," Trump said during a government meeting, according to US media.
He further added that the Russian president is “talking a lot of nonsense” about the war in Ukraine, using language unusual for international diplomacy. Along the same lines, Trump spoke in support of supplying Kiev with weapons: “We want to give defensive weapons to the Ukrainians. Putin is not treating human beings well. He is killing a lot of people.”
According to The Guardian, Trump has promised to send 10 Patriot missiles to Ukraine, following a temporary halt to military aid from the Pentagon. US administration sources confirm that supplies will resume within days.
This sudden change of stance by Trump comes at a critical moment for his election campaign and for the international balance. The new harsh rhetoric towards the Kremlin is seen as an attempt to repair the previous perception that he was soft on Russia, and to position himself as a strong defender of the Western alliance in the face of Russian aggression.
