The British Prime Minister has said that today's meeting with world leaders will focus on a peace plan that Europeans will present to the US. Follow the latest developments from the summit below.
Dozens of world leaders are gathering in London today to discuss joint defense and security plans, while US military support for Ukraine has been called into question after the unprecedented Trump-Zelensky clash in the Oval Office.
European heads of state, including France, Germany, Italy, and NATO chief Mark Rutte, join leaders from Canada and Turkey.
The London summit takes on new significance after recent developments, as Europeans seek security guarantees, such as air defense, from Washington as part of a peace deal being discussed to end Russia's war in Ukraine.
The British Prime Minister spoke ahead of the summit and said that his efforts are aimed at restoring focus on what is important, while also commenting on the confrontation in Washington.
"Nobody wanted to see what happened. However, the focus must be on a lasting peace in Ukraine, which is essential for the security of Europe. The aim is to overcome the tensions and bring all this back to the central focus of supporting Ukraine and a long-term cessation of fighting," said Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Starmer further said that he does not trust Russian President Vladimir Putin.
After the historic appearance at the White House, with Zelensky facing Donald Trump and his deputy JD Vance, European leaders unanimously supported the Ukrainian leader, but also insisted that the Kiev-Washington relationship must return to normal and the minerals agreement must be signed.
A role in this is expected to be played by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who will hold a one-on-one meeting with Zelensky before the summit. Meloni has been a strong supporter of Ukraine and, at the same time, maintains excellent relations with US President Trump.
The Italian Prime Minister has just arrived at Downing Street, where she held a bilateral meeting with Sir Keir Starmer.
Mellon was warmly greeted by Starmer at the door of Number 10, before the two leaders posed for photos and went inside for talks.
Starmer said he "looks forward to the opportunity to talk to you about the important issues we face."
"We have a very similar mindset, so I look forward to hearing your views on these issues," said the British prime minister.
Meanwhile, Meloni thanked Starmer for convening today's summit.
"I think it's very, very important that we avoid the risk of the West splitting up. I think that for this, the UK and Italy can play an important role in building bridges."
She adds that if the West divides, it will "make us all weaker."/ Pamphlet
