Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has sharply criticized the European Union's plans to accelerate Ukraine's membership process, describing them as a hostile act against Budapest.
In a reaction published on social media, Orban stated that Brussels has decided that Ukraine will become an EU member by 2027 and described this initiative as "an open declaration of war against Hungary."
"They have decided that Ukraine will join the European Union as early as 2027. This new plan is an open declaration of war against Hungary," Orban wrote.
According to him, European institutions and Ukrainian authorities are ignoring the will of Hungarian citizens and exerting political pressure on Budapest. Orban also accused supporters of accelerated Ukrainian integration of aiming to weaken his government and change the internal political balance in Hungary.
Hungary has maintained a more reserved stance on military support for Ukraine and has opposed several aid packages and sanctions against Russia, sometimes using its veto power within the EU. Budapest has demanded that the Union's enlargement be based on clear and uniform criteria for all candidate countries.
The European Commission has recommended the opening of negotiations with Kiev, while the final decision requires unanimous approval by all member states. The debate on enlargement is expected to remain one of the key issues on the European agenda in the coming years.
