Starmer's fragmented plan to arm Britain!

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces a difficult political equation: how to significantly increase defense spending without opening up a new conflict within the party over welfare cuts.

Despite warnings from senior security figures, such as former NATO Secretary General George Robertson, about a "corrosive complacency" in British politics, Starmer is expected to resist calls for deep reforms to the social system.

Instead, he is considering smaller savings across departments, an approach that is seen as a forced compromise rather than a clear strategy. The long-awaited defense investment plan remains stalled amid internal clashes between the Ministry of Defense and the Treasury.

Within the Labour Party, room for manoeuvre is limited. Previous attempts to cut welfare have sparked rebellion among MPs, while raising taxes or changing debt rules are considered politically unacceptable options.

MPs acknowledge that an increase in the defense budget is inevitable, but disagree on how it should be financed. Some call for “creativity” in finding the funds, while others warn that pitting defense against welfare is the wrong choice.

Meanwhile, the final decision rests with Starmer himself, who must balance international pressure for more military spending with domestic political realities. With local elections and a parliamentary agenda limiting time, any decision seems to be being postponed, leaving the government in a waiting phase.
