Peace plan, Putin ready to start talks with Kiev; Trump and Zelensky's

Vladimir Putin told his US counterpart, Donald Trump, on Saturday that Moscow was ready to hold a new round of peace talks with Kiev after June 22 once the sides complete the exchange of prisoners and soldiers' bodies.

Putin and Trump held a 50-minute phone call on Saturday to discuss the escalating situation in Middle East peace talks and Ukraine, Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov said.

Trump posted on Truth Social to say that Putin had called him "to wish him a happy birthday" on the day he turned 79, but that "more importantly" the two discussed the Iran-Israel crisis.

"He thinks, as I do, that this Israel-Iran war has to end, which I explained to him, but his war has to end too," Trump said, referring to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Putin and Trump spoke on the phone for the fifth time since the Republican took office, in a sharp departure from the approach of his predecessor Joe Biden's administration. Trump hinted at further discussions on the war in Ukraine next week.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky did not mention whether Ukraine would agree to the next round of talks, saying only that "the exchanges will be completed and the parties will discuss the next step."

Zelensky urged the United States to "change its tone" in its dialogue with Russia, saying it was "too warm" and would not help end the fighting. He said he hoped the escalation between Israel and Iran would not result in a decrease in military aid to Kiev. "We would like to see that aid to Ukraine is not reduced because of this," he said.
