In recent hours, there have been reports of a new escalation in the conflict between Iran and Israel, with reciprocal airstrikes hitting strategic targets in both countries. Iran has launched missiles towards Israel, while earlier, Israel had launched a significant airstrike deep inside Iranian territory.
The main target of the Israeli attack was the city of Isfahan, in central Iran – an area of great strategic importance for Iran’s nuclear program. It is home to the Uranium Conversion Plant, a key part of the country’s nuclear infrastructure, as well as a large air base and a missile production complex.
The attack in Isfahan comes at a time when tensions are at their peak. In April 2024, Israel damaged an air defense system at an airport in the city, highlighting for the first time the vulnerability of the area.
Iranian authorities have stated that the nuclear facilities in Isfahan are used only for peaceful purposes, but Israel and Western countries have long raised concerns that Tehran is using these facilities for the covert development of nuclear weapons.
There is still no independent confirmation of the extent of damage or casualties from the latest attack, but the escalation of attacks has raised serious concerns about a spillover of conflict across the Middle East region. The situation remains tense, with the international community calling for restraint and urgent dialogue.
