In the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Lucina, in the center of Rome, a recent restoration project reveals a painting of one of two angels standing next to the marble bust of Umberto II of Savoy, but the face of one of the angels bears a striking resemblance to that of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
This similarity, published by "La Repubblica", has forced the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, to react regarding the case.
By order of Minister Giuli, the Special Supervisor of Rome, Daniela Porro, has instructed technical officials from the MIC to carry out an inspection today to determine the nature of the work carried out on the contemporary painting in one of the sanctuaries of San Lorenzo in Lucina and to decide what to do next.
The vicarage also intervenes, saying that the modification of the face is an initiative of the restorer.
The news of the resemblance to Prime Minister Meloni, reported by Repubblica, raises questions about the methods of intervention and the necessary controls for a place of worship of great historical value, which must be monitored by the Supervision of Cultural Heritage and Landscape.
"Who says it looks like Meloni? I restored what was there 25 years ago ," declared Bruno Valentinetti, a volunteer restorer at the Basilica. But despite his claim, the resemblance is quite obvious.
Meanwhile, Supervision technicians have been instructed to conduct an inspection today to determine the nature of the work.
" After the inspection, we will compare it with the archival materials. To determine not so much who the restoration resembles, but whether changes have been made, because the restorer would have to follow the original lines. The archive checks will be carried out on Monday because the offices are closed on weekends ," the Supervision said.
