The alarm was raised in Iran on Saturday after a powerful explosion in a building in the port of Bandar Abbas, in the Persian Gulf, one of the country's most strategic maritime hubs. The explosion caused severe material damage, while Iranian authorities were forced to react immediately to dismiss speculation of an assassination attempt on the head of the Revolutionary Guard Navy.
According to state media, the explosion damaged two floors of an eight-story building, as well as parked vehicles and surrounding businesses. Firefighters and rescue teams arrived at the area, while police cordoned off the area for security reasons and to investigate the cause.
The semi-official Tasnim news agency described as "completely false" reports on social media that the target of the explosion was the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' Navy, denying any scenario of an assassination attempt on senior military figures.

Meanwhile, a second explosion in the south of the country proved tragic, killing four members of a family, according to local reports.
Mehredad Hasanzadeh, the director general for crisis management in Hormozgan province (where Bandar Abbas is located), told IRNA that an official investigation has been launched to determine the causes of the explosion, without providing further details.
Images published on social media show that part of the building's facade has been destroyed by the explosion, while Iranian media are reporting in reserved tones, without confirming whether it was an accident or a deliberate act.
