When former President Donald Trump's lawyers met with him to discuss how to respond to a May 2022 Justice Department subpoena seeking classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, Trump allegedly suggested they tell the Justice Department they had no classified material to turn over.

The indictment also quotes Trump as saying, " Wouldn't it be better if we just told them we don't have anything here? Well look, wouldn't it be better if there were no documents ."
Now prosecutors are pointing to the comments to explain the charges they are bringing, alleging Trump sought to withhold documents sought in the federal investigation.
While Trump's team eventually turned over some documents in response to the May subpoena, weeks later the FBI conducted a search at Mar-a-Lago and found about 100 more classified records.
