Former President Donald Trump is accused of showing classified 'secret' documents on two occasions to unauthorized people and of possessing classified documents without permission. He is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
In the federal indictment unsealed Friday, former President Donald Trump faces a total of 37 counts, including 31 counts of knowingly withholding national defense information. He risks up to 20 years in prison.
In addition to the charges of knowingly withholding national defense information, the former president is also charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice, withholding a document or record, corruptly concealing a document or record from a federal investigation, and for false statements.
The classified documents that Trump kept in boxes at Mar-a-Lago included information about the defense and weapons capabilities of America and foreign countries, including US nuclear programs.
The indictment also notes that the documents contained information about potential vulnerabilities of the US and its allies to a military attack, as well as plans for possible retaliation in response to a foreign attack.
“ The classified documents that Trump kept in his boxes included information about the defense and weapons capabilities of the United States and foreign countries; the nuclear programs of the United States; the potential vulnerabilities of the United States and its allies to military attack; and plans for possible retaliation in response to a foreign attack ," the indictment states.
According to the indictment, Trump held documents from several branches of the US government's intelligence, including the CIA, the Department of Defense, the National Security Agency, the Department of Energy and the State Department.
Meanwhile, federal and local law enforcement officials are working on a plan to extradite former President Donald Trump to federal court in Miami, where he will then be arrested, according to law enforcement officials briefed on the matter.
For security reasons, officials would prefer that delivery and processing take place in a convenient location, to limit any potential threats to his security. Trump will be placed in the custody of the US Marshals and will be electronically fingerprinted.
On the other hand, the US Secret Service, which will hand Trump over to the Marshals, is also working to strengthen access for his entry and exit on the roads to the court./ Pamphlet
